Start with something you want to accomplish in Chinese, then connect every study item to that outcome. Instead of keeping separate vocabulary, grammar and character lists, build one task map: what you need to communicate, the situation, the language you might use and the characters your chosen activity requires.
Official basis: Chinese Testing International’s HSK overview identifies five components specifically for the new HSK test syllabus: tasks, topics, vocabulary, grammar and Chinese characters. The worksheet below is an editorial way to connect those components, not a reproduction of an official syllabus task or a method for assigning an HSK level. This attribution does not establish applicability to every HSK version.
Evidence boundary: The supplied captures of the syllabus page contain only a customer-service upgrade notice. They do not supply task descriptions, vocabulary lists, grammar entries or character requirements. Those details remain unverified here.
A five-component worksheet
Write one small communication goal at the top of a page. Specify a recipient, a channel and a result. Then use the table to decide which items belong on that page. These prompts and decisions are editorial suggestions; they are not CTI’s definitions of the components.
| Component | Question to answer | Decision for your map |
|---|---|---|
| Task | What should the other person understand or do? | Write an observable outcome. Narrow a broad goal such as “discuss work” to one exchange. |
| Topic | What situation gives the exchange meaning? | Record the setting and relationship. Keep unrelated subject matter off this map. |
| Vocabulary | Which words carry the essential information? | Attach each candidate word to a part of the message. Put optional additions in a separate list. |
| Grammar | How will you express the request, explanation or confirmation? | Choose a candidate pattern for that function, rather than adding a pattern merely because it is next in a textbook. |
| Chinese characters | What must you recognize or produce in this channel? | Separate reading from writing needs. Link each selected character to a word used in the exchange. |
Add two labels beside every entry: candidate for your own selection and document-supported only when you have located the relevant official entry. Leave the official level and document reference blank when evidence is missing. An empty evidence field is more informative than a guessed requirement.
Hypothetical example: rescheduling a meeting
This entire example is invented for practice. It is not an official HSK task, level requirement or model answer. Imagine sending a short Chinese message to a colleague to ask whether tomorrow’s meeting can move from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., then checking the reply.
- Task: Request the change and establish whether the colleague accepts it. Sending a question alone does not complete the chosen outcome.
- Topic: Workplace scheduling between colleagues. Relationship and tone are questions to consider, not universal rules established by this example.
- Vocabulary candidates: 会议 (meeting), 改 (change), 明天 (tomorrow), 下午 (afternoon) and 三点 (three o’clock). Keep these attached to the proposed message.
- Grammar candidate: Try 会议可以改到明天下午三点吗?, intended to mean “Can the meeting be moved to three tomorrow afternoon?” Treat it as a practice sentence, not a required exam construction.
- Character candidates: Select characters from the message, such as 会、议、改、明、天. Mark whether you need to recognize, type or handwrite them for this particular practice activity.
Give every candidate a job. If you add a word for a different workplace topic, ask whether it contributes to this exchange. If not, move it to another map. Conversely, leave a visible gap for anything you still need—for example, language for responding when the proposed time is unsuitable.
Check the connections, not just the lists
- Attempt the exchange. Draft the request and a hypothetical response. Identify where your chosen language leaves the outcome unclear.
- Repair one gap. Add or revise the vocabulary, pattern or character entry responsible for that gap. Avoid expanding every list at once.
- Audit the evidence separately. A completed practice exchange does not establish an HSK level. Official mapping requires substantive syllabus entries and their document context.
Source check date supplied for this article: 2026-10-07. This date is supplied editorial metadata, not a writer-performed live check. The overview capture is dated 2026-10-06 UTC; the latest supplied syllabus capture is dated 2026-10-07 UTC. Each source retains its separate expiry, and the later syllabus capture does not renew the overview. This article interprets captured evidence, not live availability or a firsthand learning test. Refresh the official mapping when substantive syllabus content is collected, or when CTI changes the component descriptions or level requirements. Until then, use the worksheet as a personal study organizer and keep official requirement fields unfilled.
