If you have already chosen BCT (B), use a practice log to record your chosen time budget, actual elapsed time, unfinished items, and next review action. Keep unanswered work separate from answers you completed but doubt. The template below is an editorial planning tool, not an official timing schedule or a tested preparation method.
Chinese Testing International’s BCT (B) description, captured on October 23, 2026, at 09:54:50 UTC, lists 92 questions across listening, reading, and writing, with 145 minutes overall, including five minutes for personal information. Subtracting five from 145 gives 140 minutes; that arithmetic does not establish section budgets, answer-transfer time, or freely movable time. The captured excerpt contains no detailed timing table.
Set up a practice session you can interpret
Before starting, record the material title or edition, exercise range, date, and whether you are doing selected exercises or following a complete practice paper’s instructions. Give each exercise a reference you can find again. You do not need to copy question text into the log.
For selected exercises, enter your own time budgets and label them as personal choices. For an exam-style rehearsal, obtain the applicable timing and administration instructions first; this article cannot supply them. A learner-chosen listening budget is not permission to shorten audio, pause it, or replay it while calling the session an exam simulation.
Choose one recording rule: at the planned stopping point, stop and note unfinished work before reviewing. If you continue afterward, record that continuation separately. Otherwise, a longer session may appear to have fewer unfinished items simply because it received more time.
Copy this blank practice log
Session header: Date: ____; material and exercise range: ____; selected exercises or instructed rehearsal: ____; timing basis: ____; interruptions or departures from instructions: ____.
| Practice area | Chosen budget, minutes | Elapsed, minutes | Unfinished references at stop | Next review action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | ____ | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Reading | ____ | ____ | ____ | ____ |
| Writing | ____ | ____ | ____ | ____ |
Separate notes: Completed but uncertain references: ____; untimed continuation and extra minutes: ____; one change for the next comparable session: ____.
Use “none” when nothing was unfinished and “not recorded” when you do not know. A blank cell should not silently mean zero. For a partially completed response, name what remains rather than counting it as wholly untouched.
Filled example: selected exercises, not a full mock exam
Hypothetical example: A learner selects a short exercise set for each area and chooses the budgets below. All times and outcomes are invented to demonstrate the log. L4, R3, and W2 are learner-created references, not official BCT question labels.
| Practice area | Chosen budget, minutes | Elapsed, minutes | Unfinished at stop | Review action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 15 | 15 | L4: no answer recorded | Review L4 outside the timed session; note where understanding broke down. |
| Reading | 20 | 18 | None; all attempted | Review R3, marked uncertain, without counting it as unfinished. |
| Writing | 15 | 15 | W2: response started but incomplete | Identify the missing part, then finish it untimed in a separate record. |
The reading entry illustrates why “finished” and “confident” need different fields. Finishing early does not establish accuracy. The writing entry preserves the incomplete response at the stopping point rather than replacing it with the later, completed version.
Choose the next action from the record
The following decisions are editorial suggestions, not official preparation guidance or diagnoses of language ability.
| What the log shows | Check before concluding | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Budget exceeded | Was there an interruption or an unrecorded continuation? | Keep the original elapsed time; flag the session before comparing it with another. |
| Unfinished work at the cutoff | Was it untouched, partly completed, or attempted without a recorded answer? | Review the specific reference and record the obstacle, rather than simply writing “too slow.” |
| Everything attempted, some answers uncertain | Were uncertain references recorded separately? | Review those answers without relabeling them as unfinished. |
| Fewer unfinished items next time | Were material scope, time allowance, and practice conditions comparable? | Describe the difference; do not treat it alone as proof of improvement. |
Close with one review commitment
Choose one concrete action from the unfinished or uncertain references before planning another session. Keep the original timed record intact and add review notes beside it. This produces a traceable account of what happened, without turning practice counts into a predicted BCT score.
Source boundary: This guide uses the October 23, 2026 capture linked above, not firsthand testing or a live availability check. Revisit the official instructions before an exam-style rehearsal and refresh this guide if the published structure or timing changes.
